416th Bomb Group Morning Reports

These are 416th Bomb Group World War II (WWII) era Morning Reports for Headquarters (HQ) and the 4 Bomb Squadrons (BS).

What is a Morning Report?
• The Morning Report is a daily history of the company or headquarters. It is one of the oldest and most important documents maintained by the military establishment because it reveals, as of midnight each night, the strength of the organization as well as all changes in duties and status of the personnel which occurred during the preceding 24 hours.
• Regulations required that Morning Reports be prepared and presented to the Commanding Officer on the morning following the day on which the events occurred. However, some companies disregarded the instructions and recorded events under the date on which the records were presented to the Commanding Officer.
• Morning Reports were completed at all levels of an organization, down to the lowest echelon. The Morning Report exists from the division level to the company level. (McMahon, More WWII Morning Reports in the NARA Catalog.)

A Morning Report summarizes the reporting unit's military daily strength and lists any status changes in assigned personnel.
Morning Reports may contain the following types of information: strength of the unit, ration account, remarks concerning the Army, Army Air Corps, and Army Air Force military service members. The report typically details name, rank, arm of service, service number, and any changes to unit strength by listing a brief description of the change (i.e., discharge, reassignment, hospitalization, absence, and return from absence) for effected service members.
The WWII Morning Reports may also include the service members' morale, unit activities, or physical/geographic location under the 'record of events' section. (NARA, Morning Reports, 1940–1946)

Morning Report Formats
Morning Reports in the early part of WWII (through July, 1943 for the 416th BG) continued to use a very similar format as that used in WWI, sometimes identified as the "Book Type". During the summer of 1943 (starting with the August, 1943 Reports used by the 416th BG), this changed to use a one-page per day format. These pages were about 4.5 by 10.25 inches and filed out in triplicate - the White copy submitted to the unit personnel section, Yellow stored in the organizational files and Green was forwarded to Base or Station Commander. (McMahon, 2025)

Jim Roeder's personal experience notes and comments
Per Jim Roeder's time as a Department Service Officer for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), his duties included assisting vets and dependents file claims and respond to the VA decisions regarding claims and benefits. This included finding records.
He found that the Company/Squadron/Battalion/Group Morning Reports, while helpful, we're not always complete. He notes that he also checked the Station Hospital and it's Individual (Squadron) Medical Unit(s) Morning Reports. Many times he found personnel mentioned in one report but not the other. More than once he found needed information in the medical Morning Reports that was not available in the "standard" reports.
If nothing is found in these additional sources, also look for all USAAF and USA Field and Station hospitals. Doing so was particularly useful if a crew or crew member bailed out before mission return or the aircraft crashed or force landed. Then, once you have looked at those sources, check the RAF and Royal Army facilities.
This research path is not necessarily quick and or easy, but it can be and often was (for Jim) very fruitful.
